WHAT IS "NEW DIRECTIONS"?: New Directions Support Group / Abington, PA, is a support and education group for people with bipolar disorder, depression and their families & friends. Our mission is to help people achieve meaningful, productive and joyous lives even if that means changing our goals and our lifestyles to accommodate our illness.
WHO CAN ATTEND?: Highly motivated people with a primary diagnosis of a mood disorder (bipolar disorder or depression) who are under the care of a physician for their condition. Friends and families of individuals with mood disorders are welcome.
WHERE ARE MEETINGS HELD?: Abington Presbyterian Church, 1082 Old York Road at Susquehanna, Abington PA 19001. We attract an average of 50 people per meeting, ages 20 to 75. Newcomers warmly welcomed.
WHEN DO YOU MEET?: 1st and 3rd and 5th TUESDAYS of the month from 7:30 PM to 9:45 PM.
WHAT IS THE FORMAT?: We meet in small discussion groups of 6 to 8 people (bipolar group, depression group, family and friends group). On the 3rd Tuesday of the month we have a guest speaker, followed by our small group discussions. Guest speakers include psychopharmacologists, therapists, researchers, employment specialists, nutritionists.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?: $5 per person, $8 per family.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU OFFER?: In addition to our two "general meetings" per month, we offer 2 daytime meetings a month and social activities. Come to our general meeting and you'll learn about our exciting array of activities. We also offer special programs throughout the year plus our Famous Coffeeshop Gigs featuring talented members of our group plus others such as our medical advisor psychiatrist/singer Dr. Pam London Barrett.
